Consequences of no treatment

Deciding not to undergo treatment for a dental problem is always an option, although it may not be in your best interest.

Allowing tooth decay to go untreated will result in destruction of additional tooth structure, and the need for more extensive dentistry including endodontic (root canal) therapy, tooth extraction, and tooth replacement. Eventually, the bacteria that are present in a tooth cavity will reach the hollow inside of the tooth ("pulp"), and will have an open pathway into your jawbone. This can cause pain, swelling, numbness or altered sensation; and can lead to tooth loss. Premature loss of teeth causes the other teeth to change positions, altering the bite, and affecting the jaw joints. Rarely, infections resulting from advanced tooth decay have led to death.
