Gingival recession

Common related diagnoses

It is possible that this diagnosis is part of a larger problem. Treating this condition may not treat the underlying cause. This condition may also lead to other problems. Here are some possible related diagnoses to investigate and talk to your dentist about.

Treating gingival recession should not be undertaken without determining the underlying cause(s) of the condition and treating those as well. Gingival recession may be due in part to heavy bite stresses of chronic bruxism, or poor alignment of the teeth (malocclusion). It can also be caused by periodontal disease ("periodontitis").

Gingival recession may lead to the development of other conditions, such as dentin hypersensitivity and gumline caries (particularly in Xerostomia patients). Those conditions may require treatment as well.
